Software Development

The Qt toolkit from trolltech is an excellent set of libraries that allow for easy creation of professional graphical interfaces. The KDE desktop environment for the GNU/Linux operating system is built using Qt.

PIC Microcontrollers

Microchip make the PIC series of microcontrollers (along with other devices).
sdcc.sf.net is the home of the SDCC compiler, a free open source compiler that targets various micros including the PIC range from Microchip.

Electronic Design tools:

KICAD An excellent and open source solution for electronic design and board layout. It only takes 1 - 2 hours to learn and is better than other tools I have tried and completly free with no board size limitations etc. Gerber output.
